Hi Arthur....You are doing very good job down there in Kabul with releasing such good news. This is a good news that Amerkhel returned to his home and to see again his family and kids. The guy, as I know him deserve all encouragements and rewards the work he has done as Chief of of Border Police for Kabul International airport, he arrested many drug traffickers and confiscated big amount of drugs..one day he arrested some ladies, who were bound to Dili with some drugs, one of them was threatening Amerkhel that he can not arrest her and she will inform the top official in president Karzia government. As per Amerkhel Remarks, the lady was released without any punishment. Amerkhel can not do enough, if we do not have a good legal and judeciary system to prosecute the culprits and punish them as per Afghanistan criminal laws....but if the law impelementros are like Sabit and Azimi then who will do so. One person can not do enough, if all the system is not good. I know we have counter drug unit with police and intellegence depratments, despite that there is an independent ministry of counter norcatics....but the resluts are increasing in the drugs cultivation, production, processing and trafficking all over the country, especially in the South, South East and Eastern Regions. I assume big officials in the governments are involved in this busness, all the money goes to thier pocket.
We need the rule of the law and good governance, clean adminstyeration and determined officails to defaet the evil of drugs from our country, otherwise one person can not do enough in this regard. There is no difference between the terrorism and drugs, bot are enemies of the mankind and free world.

Thanks and regards,

Word on the street in Kabul tonight: the Attorney General's latest attempt to arrest his rival has failed. Meantime, President Karzai faces mounting pressure to intervene. The spectacle of two of his top lawmen locked in battle for their careers is further compromising his regime's credibility.

Just to let you know, Arthur, that of the following elected officials and newspapers that I emailed regarding Sabet, NOT ONE responded to the letters, nor acknowledged receipt. How's that for Canadian politicians and their accountability to the electorate?? And they wonder why they are not respected any more!

The mute public servants are the following:

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Reform/Alliance Conservative, Office of the Prime Minister

Liberal Defence Critic: Denis Coderre at Coderre.D@parl.gc.ca

Liberal Immigration Critic: Omar Alghabra at Alghabra.O@parl.gc.ca

NDP Defense Critic: Dawn Black at Blackd@parl.gc.ca

NDP Immigration Critic: Bill Siksay at Siksay.B@parl.gc.ca

Blair Wilson, Liberal MP for West Vancouver, British Columbia (I emailed him twice - no acknowledgement from his office at all - this is my MP. It's been 2 weeks now - quite unbelievable and he's lost a couple of votes in our household because of it!)

Makes one so proud to live in a country where one's elected creatures (I considered them to be human until quite recently) take their elected status seriously and, with dignity, honour and a stirling sense of duty, keep their electorate updated when they receive queries. Shame on them all. It appears that the new crop of elected things in many countries are really just out for all they can grab while in power, Canada included.

All this aside, what a great story about Amerkhel. So nice to hear of one thing gone right. Please continue to keep us posted with your frank opinions and knowledgeable insight of this wondrous country, Afghanistan.

Hey PS Barr - go get 'em! Sure it's disappointing that some of Canada's leading opposition politicians evidently have better things to do than acquaint themselves with the facts, but the point is that you've tried, you've taken direct and constructive action.

Must say that Dawn Black's office has made contact with skyreporter.com, thank you very much. And as well, the Liberal's foreign affairs critic Ujaal Dosanjh has responded to queries. Not a heartbeat of response, though, from Stephen Harper's minority Conservative government, but here's something in the way of progress - some of Canada's leading public servants in several different ministries and agencies are now talking.

These are honourable and dedicated people, who sadly have been muzzled by Mr. Harper's media-control team on Parliament Hill. (Ironic, isn't it, that the peoples' house of common lawmaking should be the scene of information control on an almost Orwellian scale?)

Anyway, thanks for the contact information. I'm sure more than a few of our sky readers will want to send their thoughts to the folks above. Oh, and Blair's office number please? I'll call him from Kabul...

regarding Amarkhail , yes we know him , he did alote for afghanistan but he found a very bad name at the end and as per a personal problem of SABIT, and misbehaivour of Sabit , he dismissed form his job, one thing what SABIT did yet to Afghans? he cant do any thing with the real bad men and he cant cathch the bads. just he can dismis the honests like Amarkhail , Stanikzay Mayor of Jalaabad , Mujadidi Mayur of Herat, but he never arrest a big Commonder like ...... at Jalabad or he cant arrest or do some thing with who are reall at black list of government.
we just want the judgment with Amarkhail , he must to get back his seat or a higher post then his old seatbecuse he know how to do his job and how to deal with drugers, also he must to appracited form the government side not to punichmet form Mr. President as he cant ear the throughts just he is listening to his beside DOGS like Sabit etc.....

Arthur,

I'm interested in reading about Afghanistan's early history, particularly Ancient times. Are there any titles that you would recommend?

Thanks

Right up to the moment of issuing a boarding pass to fliers in Canada air travelers have no idea if they are on the newly conceived Canadian no-fly list. The moment of realization comes at the crucial step of obtaining the pass onto the aircraft. Begs the question, are people who disagree with Canada's current role in Afghanistan eligible for the Canadian no-fly list?

If there is a mass demonstration announced for Regina (a la the Regina Revolt circa 1930s)against the war in Afghanistan, and a neighbour tells everybody he's flying to Regina to join the march against the war in Afghanistan, and somebody visiting from the US who voted for Bush and would again hears him tell the block party he's gonna carry a skull and crossbones flag and wear a patch on one eye and a peg-leg, and say AAAARGH a lot (because peg legs hurt), phones his cousin Dick Cheney and then the US tells the Canadian no-fly list people that maybe he should be put on the list, does that save him a trip to that awful place? No, "he takes the train."

Apparently the list is composed of anywhere from 500 to 2,000 people, but they only started Friday afternoon. By next Friday it could be 10 times as long. (I am reminded of the speech made by President Harry Truman when he announced, one day, in 1950, "Today I am spending $100 million to assist (the French) to stop the Communist insurgency in Vietnam." The fine print which ended up running several pages and was added later and took a lot of people by surprise, was $100 million every day.)

Speaking of eligibility, are First Nations people put on no-fly lists to restrict their travel leading up to Jun 29 07? Was the timing of the announcement partly to do with Jun 29 07, to perhaps deter some First Nations people from contemplating air travel to hotspots in Canada?

Using your web site as a valuable tool to forming an opinion on our country's (canada) role in Afghanistan. One thing is clear, and I've always suspected it, that were not getting the whole picture from our politician's or the media. Look forward to the updates.

Malcolm McColl:

In the US the regime of Bush/Cheney has definitely put people who oppose the war and the regime on no-fly lists.Google it.So it becomes a fear tactic to prevent others from saying anything negative.
P.S Barr good luck with all that.Even if ya do get a response it will be the typical form letter touting the usual song and dance.
Arthur,Karzai was told yesterday that no NATO help in unsecure areas of the south. And some higher up on CBC when asked about the poppy croppy said this is basically a "keep your hands off" situation.
Saw another man from there last evening who used to in in government say things are getting worse as far as security goes.According to him,Hamid wants him back but he isn't going.Think he was a doctor.
Good news the 2 Italian military were rescued and the kidnappers killed;

Posted by Arthur Kent  |  September 24, 2007 8:09 a.m.

Ted, word from the Karzai entourage is that Dick Cheney intimate Zalmay Khalilzad, current US Ambo to the UN but formerly of Kabul and Baghdad, is keeping the Afghan delegation on a very short leash in New York. Hence Karzai's focus on "peace talks" with compliant Taliban - this to prevent a repeat of last week's statements by Karzai that should Canada withdraw its combat troops from Kandahar in February, 2009, Afghanistan would descend into chaos. Two different stories for two different audiences. Go figure.

Well Arthur this doesn,t surprise me in the least after the queen of Iraq(Condi Rice) was sent poste haste to tell Maliki to back of on the Blackwater murders of innocent Afghan citizens. It's why they are called US puppet regimes.
