Afghanistan’s upper house of parliament, the Senate, has been spurned in two attempts to get answers from President Karzai’s accident-prone Attorney General, Abdul Jabar Sabet.

The Meshrano Jirga, or House of Elders, wants answers regarding several of Sabet’s controversial prosecutions, including, says Speaker Sibgatullah Mojadidi, his “violation of the constitution” – a reference to the violent police raid launched last week by Sabet against independent broadcaster Tolo TV.

A source in Mojadidi’s office tells skyreporter.com that several Senate members are discussing disciplinary measures against Sabet. “He’s gone mad,” says the official, “and we are waiting to see when the President will restrain him.”

No sign of that yet, however, as President Karzai’s international sponsors - his key constituency - seem unconcerned by Sabet’s abuses of police power and his incitement of mobs against the media.
